BAKU, Azerbaijan – At a time when international cooperation and regional security are more important than ever, the Embassy of Sweden in Baku has taken a significant step forward. By hosting a trilateral NATO-focused meeting with representatives from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, Sweden created a unique platform for dialogue, mutual understanding, and constructive partnership.
Gathering these three South Caucasus nations—whose relationships have at times been marked by historical complexities—at the same table in a positive and forward-looking spirit is, in itself, a remarkable diplomatic achievement.
A Foundation for Practical Cooperation and Future Trust
The meeting centered around key aspects of NATO’s partnership agenda: defense reform, civil-military cooperation, and pathways to greater interoperability with NATO structures. Each country contributed valuable insights, demonstrating a shared commitment to transparency and cooperation.
- Georgia, with its long-standing ties to NATO, shared lessons from its path toward deeper Euro-Atlantic integration.
- Armenia emphasized the importance of adapting its defense posture to meet new regional realities.
- Azerbaijan, as host of the event, expressed clear interest in strengthening partnership mechanisms, particularly in areas such as civil preparedness and crisis response.
The tone was constructive, respectful, and notably optimistic—a testament to the importance of diplomacy even in complex geopolitical environments.
Sweden and Slovakia: NATO Contact Point Embassies
As of early 2025, Sweden and Slovakia officially serve as NATO’s Contact Point Embassies in Azerbaijan—a role they will hold until 2026. This diplomatic responsibility involves facilitating dialogue, coordinating outreach efforts, and supporting NATO-related activities in close cooperation with the Azerbaijani authorities.
Through inclusive leadership and a respectful approach, the Swedish Embassy demonstrated the positive impact that active, values-based diplomacy can have in bringing partners together and building trust.
